Our hangouts were primarily Hillside Drive-in Burgers, on Brea Boulevard just above Harbor; Carl's Anaheim, on Harbor just south of the 91 Freeway -- and to a lesser extent, Martone's Ice Cream Shoppe, on Harbor & Bastanchury, NW corner; Giovanni's Pizza, on Williamson Way, just off Commonwealth & Euclid; and The Snack Shop, SW corner of Commonwealth & Euclid; sometimes Best Burgers on Commonwealth one block east of Euclid; sometimes A&W Root Beer, Imperial at Puente in Fullerton or maybe Brea; as well as the Teen Center in Hillcrest Park; and earlier, Harmony Lane in Anaheim and the Retail Clerk's Hall in Buena Park. Approximately 100 to 150 SHHS students worked at Disneyland at any one time during the 60s, so that should be included. One of our favorite beach spots was 15th Street in Newport. There were many more, including the Turntable Record Shop on Harbor at Union, west side.

One stands out. In the year '65-'66, our brave varsity basketball team (Bill Brehm, Terry Hackett, Gary Gentry, Larry Comstock and crew) visited Magnolia High School in Anaheim. Soon the game became .. rough, let's say. Before long, it became .. rougher. Suddenly there were several fouls committed and one famous '66 Lancer boy ran from the stands to engage one Magnolia player after another in fisticuffs, with telling effect. A general brawl ensued, with quite a few young fellows fighting, and fists flying. After a while, order was restored, and some of the young men were escorted to the police station where their parents were called to come get them. You might call this incident The Battle of Magnolia.

At a dance during the 1964-1965 year, two of the most senior girls showed up dressed as boys. That was considered a scandal by some and they were kicked out and sent home to change. ---- During an assembly in the 1963-1964 school year, 4 of the girls dressed up as Beatles (John, Paul, George and Ringo) and imitated one of the most famous poses of the Liverpool Lads ..

There were 2 I remember. One was "Near Miss At Angel's Camp", written by Julie (Twombly) Engstrom, '67, a member of Mrs. Frances Obler's Playwriting Class in 1966 or 1967. The other was "Superman" in the 1966-1967 school year, with Gail Wilson, '67 singing the role of Lois Lane, and Pat Pawlicki, '67 singing the role of Superman. Both these musicals were performed in Lancer Gym, I believe for Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night performances. Both were very successful and many Lancers took part onstage or behind the scenes.

The most popular prank then was to "paper" someone's house with dozens of rolls of toilet paper thrown from the street in the dead of night -- often with the residents inside sleeping soundly -- until the house was covered with tangled, snarled tissue that took hours to remove. On your way to school the next morning, you'd see these houses papered and have a laugh.
